Description
Transform simple orange peels into a sweet and chewy delight that enhances both taste and texture, perfect for snacks or baking.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 fresh unwaxed oranges (preferably organic, navel or Valencia)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- Pinch of salt
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional spices: 1 cinnamon stick, 2 star anise, or 3 cloves
- Powdered sugar or coconut sugar for a vegan glaze alternative
- Dark or white chocolate for dipping (optional)
Instructions
- Wash the oranges well to remove any dirt or residues.
- Carefully peel the oranges with a sharp knife, avoiding the white pith.
- Slice the peel into thin strips, about 1/4 inch wide.
- Place the sliced peels in a pot filled with cold water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 10 minutes.
- Drain and repeat the boiling and draining process 2-3 times to reduce bitterness.
- In the same pot, combine 1 cup of water and 1 cup of granulated sugar, bringing to a gentle boil until the sugar dissolves. Add salt, vanilla extract, or spices if desired.
- Add the boiled peels to the sugar syrup. Cook over low heat for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the peels are translucent and the syrup thickens.
- Transfer the peels onto a cooling rack lined with parchment paper and allow to dry for a few hours or overnight.
- Optionally, roll in sugar or dip in melted chocolate once dry.
Notes
Keep the peels in an airtight container at room temperature. Enjoy them within a week for best quality.
