Delightful heart-shaped cookies decorated with royal icing, perfect for any celebration.


Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons meringue powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 56 tablespoons water
  • Food coloring as needed

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a small bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth.
  4. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
  6. Roll the dough on a floured surface to a 1/4 inch thickness.
  7. Cut out heart shapes using cookie cutters.
  8. Place cookies about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
  9. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the edges are golden.
  10. Let cookies cool completely on wire racks before decorating.
  11. In a large bowl, combine meringue powder, powdered sugar, and water.
  12. Beat on high until stiff peaks form, about 5 to 7 minutes.
  13. Divide icing into bowls and color as desired.
  14. Decorate the cookies with icing using piping bags or spreaders.
  15. Allow the icing to dry completely before storing.

Notes

Ensure butter is softened for better mixing. Don’t skip cooling cookies before decorating to help icing set better.
