Ingredients

- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 tablespoons meringue powder
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 5–6 tablespoons water
- Food coloring as needed
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a small bowl, mix together flour, baking soda, and baking powder.
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until smooth.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients into the wet mixture.
- Roll the dough on a floured surface to a 1/4 inch thickness.
- Cut out heart shapes using cookie cutters.
- Place cookies about 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes until the edges are golden.
- Let cookies cool completely on wire racks before decorating.
- In a large bowl, combine meringue powder, powdered sugar, and water.
- Beat on high until stiff peaks form, about 5 to 7 minutes.
- Divide icing into bowls and color as desired.
- Decorate the cookies with icing using piping bags or spreaders.
- Allow the icing to dry completely before storing.
Notes
Ensure butter is softened for better mixing. Don’t skip cooling cookies before decorating to help icing set better.
