- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon white vinegar
- Red food coloring gel or liquid
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
- Red candy melts or small red candy hearts
- Optional: white chocolate if making your own hearts
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a muffin pan with cupcake liners.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine the oil, buttermilk, egg, vanilla, and vinegar. Add red food coloring until you reach a rich shade of red.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and mix gently until the batter is smooth.
- Fill each cupcake liner about two-thirds full with the batter.
- Bake for approximately 17 to 18 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean. Allow them to cool completely before frosting.
- To make the frosting, beat the softened butter until creamy. Add the powdered sugar, vanilla, and a splash of milk until smooth and fluffy.
- Pipe a tall swirl of frosting on each cupcake using a large star tip.
- Top with a little red heart made by dipping a white chocolate heart into melted red candy coating or use store-bought heart candy.

Ensure your ingredients are at room temperature for better mixing. Don’t overmix the batter; mix just until combined for lighter cupcakes.
