Description

Soft and delightful red velvet sugar cookies, perfect for celebrating love and sweetness on Valentine’s Day.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 12 teaspoons red gel food coloring
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Sparkling sugar or granulated sugar, for rolling

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together softened butter, cream cheese, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing in the red gel food coloring until the color is uniform.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, combining until just mixed. Do not overmix.
  6. Scoop 1.5 tablespoon-sized balls of dough (about 30g each). Roll each ball until smooth, then roll in sparkling sugar or granulated sugar to coat.
  7. Place cookies about 2 inches apart on the prepared sheets.
  8. Bake one sheet at a time for 10-12 minutes, until the tops are set and slightly cracked.
  9. Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  10. (Optional) Drizzle with melted white chocolate, sprinkle with heart decorations, or sandwich two cookies with cream cheese frosting.

Notes

Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or freeze for longer storage.
