Ingredients
Scale
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1–2 teaspoons red gel food coloring
- 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- Sparkling sugar or granulated sugar, for rolling
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
- In a large bowl, beat together softened butter, cream cheese, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing in the red gel food coloring until the color is uniform.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients into the wet mixture, combining until just mixed. Do not overmix.
- Scoop 1.5 tablespoon-sized balls of dough (about 30g each). Roll each ball until smooth, then roll in sparkling sugar or granulated sugar to coat.
- Place cookies about 2 inches apart on the prepared sheets.
- Bake one sheet at a time for 10-12 minutes, until the tops are set and slightly cracked.
- Allow cookies to cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- (Optional) Drizzle with melted white chocolate, sprinkle with heart decorations, or sandwich two cookies with cream cheese frosting.
