Description

Delightful sparkly sugar cookies perfect for any occasion, especially Valentine’s Day.


Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sanding sugar or colored sugar (for coating)
  • Optional: red or pink food coloring

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
  2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. If desired, add food coloring for a pink or red tint.
  5. Cover the dough and refrigerate for 30–45 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
  8. Roll each cookie in sanding sugar or sprinkle sugar generously over the tops for sparkle.
  9. Place cookies 2 inches apart on baking sheets and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until edges are set but not browned.
  10. Cool cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For best results, ensure butter is softened to room temperature and do not skip the chilling step.
