Description
Delightful sparkly sugar cookies perfect for any occasion, especially Valentine’s Day.
Ingredients
Scale
- 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup sanding sugar or colored sugar (for coating)
- Optional: red or pink food coloring
Instructions
- In a large bowl, beat softened butter and sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2 minutes.
- Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until fully combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing just until combined. If desired, add food coloring for a pink or red tint.
- Cover the dough and refrigerate for 30–45 minutes.
- Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Roll out the chilled dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
- Roll each cookie in sanding sugar or sprinkle sugar generously over the tops for sparkle.
- Place cookies 2 inches apart on baking sheets and bake for 8–10 minutes, or until edges are set but not browned.
- Cool cookies on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For best results, ensure butter is softened to room temperature and do not skip the chilling step.
