- 3 cups all-purpose flour (unbleached)
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 cup butter (salted, cold & cut into chunks, 2 sticks)
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 egg
- 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/2 cup butter (softened, 1 stick)
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons milk (or more as needed)
- 2 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- 1–2 drops liquid food coloring (red)
- Sprinkles (Valentine’s Day themed)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350° F.
- In a small bowl, stir together the flour and baking powder. Set this mixture aside.
- In a large mixing bowl, cream together the cold butter and granulated sugar until smooth.
- Stir in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract.
- Slowly incorporate the dry flour mixture into the wet ingredients until combined.
- Roll the dough out on a floured surface to just over 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut out cookies in heart shapes or with X and O cookie cutters. Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Freeze for 5-7 minutes before baking.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes until lightly golden.
- Allow to cool for 3 minutes on the baking sheet before transferring to cooling racks.
- If using buttercream frosting, prepare as desired. If opting for a glaze, combine powdered sugar with milk, vanilla, and food coloring.
Notes
For better texture, ensure your butter is at the right temperature before creaming. Don’t over-bake the cookies; they should feel soft in the center.
