Ingredients

  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Royal icing or colored sprinkles for decorating

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. In a separate, large bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture; beat until well combined.
  4. Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until the dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough in half, flatten into discs, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  7. Roll out the chilled dough to 1/4-inch thickness.
  8. Cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter.
  9. Place the heart shapes on the prepared baking sheets.
  10. Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are just barely golden.
  11. Cool completely on a wire rack before decorating with royal icing or sprinkles.

Notes

Cookies can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for about a week. They can also be frozen for up to three months.
