Ingredients

- 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Deep red royal icing (prepared separately)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients.
- Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place onto ungreased cookie sheets. Flatten each ball with the bottom of a glass dipped in sugar.
- Bake for 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven or until golden. Let cool on wire racks.
- Once cool, decorate with deep red royal icing using Valentine’s cookie cutters for shapes.
Notes
To achieve the best texture, ensure butter is softened but not melted. Avoid over-mixing.
